Located west of Lone Pine at the end of the Whitney Portal Road this small pond is a good spot for rainbow trout. The Department of Fish and Game stocks the pond on a regular basis but it is so heavily fished and the fish are very gun-shy that just getting your line in the water can be a problem. But it is a picturesque spot and a nice place to spend the time while waiting to head up to Mt. Whitney. The Whitney Portal store is a good place to hang out in the pines. The best time to fish the pond is during the week and in the early season. Avoid this spot on the weekend and holidays. You can pick up bait and tackle at the small store north of the pond. They also have a restaurant and hot showers.
