My friend Bob summed it up this way: the sun was out, the air was warm, and the fish were still sleeping. Not much action but it was a nice trip.

The consensus is that while the weather was fairly nice and there was no snow whipping in people’s faces, the fishing was tough for the Opening Weekend. The water is just too cold to wake up the fish! A few people did pretty well on Crowley. I’m told that if you were fishing near Hilton Point, things weren’t too bad and trollers were doing okay near McGee Bay. Overall, this was a nice tune-up weekend and a chance to get out and enjoy some of the most impressive scenery in the world. Now’s your chance…tell us your experience.

A Baetis hatch is already blooming in the Owens River Gorge on down to Pleasant Valley Reservoir by noon. Caddis flies are producing well by mid-afternoon. This is always a nice time to fish this section of the Owens. The water’s flowing about 45 cfs into Pleasant Valley and the water is clear. Get down there now because it’s starting to warm up and the snakes will be out in a month or so!
